The Pilot Custom 823 Fountain Pen in Smoke is a modern classic for writers who prize reliability, ink capacity, and an uncluttered, purposeful aesthetic. Its translucent smoke resin offers a clear view of the vacuum plunger mechanism, while warm gold accents and a 14k gold nib deliver the refined feel that has made this model a go-to for dedicated daily writing.
Craftsmanship & Design
Shaped from durable, lightweight resin, the smoke-toned demonstrator body balances visual intrigue with everyday practicality. The integrated vacuum plunger fills quickly and cleanly from bottled ink, and the shutoff valve at the end of the barrel helps secure the reservoir for travel or storage. A wide cap band and functional clip ground the design in Pilot's restrained, tool-first language, with the clarity of the demonstrator format highlighting the pen's precise internal engineering.
Writing Experience
Pilot's 14k gold nib is tuned for consistency and control, offering smoothness with a touch of tactile feedback that keeps handwriting crisp. Available in fine, medium, and broad, the line widths follow Pilot's characteristically precise Japanese sizing. Flow remains steady across longer sessions; for uninterrupted ink delivery, simply back off the blind cap slightly to open the shutoff valve during extended writing. Balanced in hand and comfortable posted or unposted, the Custom 823 is built for pages, not just signatures.
Brand Heritage
Since 1918, Pilot has set a high standard for Japanese nib making and dependable everyday instruments. The Custom 823 reflects that lineage: purposeful design, intelligent filling technology, and a writing feel trusted by enthusiasts who value performance over ornament.

I love how the Pilot Customer 823 looks and feels. The fine nib is a smooth writer, with just a bit of feedback. The Smoke finish is pretty subtle, noticible in the thin areas of the pen like the edge of the cap, while thicker areas approach opaque.
I have the 823 inked with Akkermann Shocking Blue, the house ink of choice. My only gripe is that the feed does not seem enough. When first un-capped, the line is nicely wet, not a gusher but a good amount of ink. By the end of a paragraph, the pen is laying down a very dry line and starting to skip on the downstroke. I can wet it up by unscrewing and retightening the fill, which seems to push a bit of ink into the feed. Perhaps the problem is with the ink?
My next step is to try it with a thinner ink to see if the feed can keep up with a consistent writing session. If not, I may have to get the feed worked on.
Given the look and feel, I really want this pen to be a favorite, with a nice consistent wet line, like it starts out.
It looks great. It writes smooth, and holds a lot of ink. Get one and see!
Picked this up in the store in downtown Greenville a couple of weeks ago, and I couldn’t be happier with the pen. Chris was great at responding to my questions and I’ve not only found a great pen, but I’ve found one I enjoy writing with every day. I highly recommend the Custom 823.
