The ConCoPens Traditional Vietnamese Lacquer Fountain Pen - Moc Brown captures the warmth and organic beauty of natural wood through the lens of traditional Vietnamese lacquer artistry. Rich chestnut and amber tones flow across the pen's surface in subtle, naturally occurring patterns that evoke polished hardwood, aged timber, and the quiet elegance of handcrafted objects made to be appreciated over time.

Named "Moc," the Vietnamese word associated with wood and the natural element of growth and authenticity, this fountain pen embraces simplicity rather than ornamentation. Its understated appearance allows the beauty of the lacquer itself to take center stage, revealing delicate shifts in tone and depth as light moves across the hand-polished finish.

Craftsmanship & Design

Moc Brown is handcrafted over a natural Vietnamese wood core and finished using traditional lacquer techniques that have been practiced in Vietnam for generations. Multiple layers of natural lacquer are carefully applied, cured, and polished by hand, gradually building the finish's remarkable depth and luminous surface. The resulting appearance possesses a warmth and dimensionality that cannot be replicated through synthetic coatings or mass-production methods.

The deep brown coloration recalls the appearance of fine hardwoods and traditional Vietnamese lacquerware. Each pen develops its own subtle character through variations in grain-like patterning and tonal movement, ensuring that no two examples are entirely identical. This individuality is one of the enduring appeals of handcrafted lacquer, where the materials and artisan's hand both contribute to the finished piece.

Vietnamese Lacquer vs. Japanese Urushi

One of the most common questions surrounding ConCoPens is how Vietnamese lacquer compares to Japanese Urushi. Both are considered true Asian lacquers derived from natural tree sap and have been used for centuries to create decorative objects of exceptional beauty and durability.

Japanese Urushi is produced from the sap of the lacquer tree, Toxicodendron vernicifluum, and contains a natural compound called urushiol. Vietnamese lacquer originates from the sap of the Vietnamese lacquer tree, Toxicodendron succedaneum, and is primarily composed of a related compound known as laccol. Although chemically distinct, both lacquers undergo a similarly demanding process of repeated application, controlled curing, and hand polishing to achieve their remarkable depth and luster.

Because the trees belong to the same botanical family, individuals with known sensitivities to urushi should understand that Vietnamese lacquer cannot be considered inherently hypoallergenic. However, once fully cured, both lacquers become extraordinarily durable finishes prized for their resistance and longevity.

Vietnamese lacquer is not a simplified version of Japanese Urushi, nor is it an imitation of it. Rather, it represents its own rich artistic tradition with a particular emphasis on layered color, luminous depth, and decorative techniques such as shell inlay. The affordability of many Vietnamese lacquer pens generally reflects differences in workshop scale, labor economics, and market positioning rather than any reduction in craftsmanship or authenticity.

Writing Experience

The natural wood construction gives Moc Brown a comfortable, balanced feel in hand while allowing the pen to retain a reassuring sense of substance. The gently tapered profile and polished lacquer surface provide a tactile experience that feels warm and inviting, encouraging slower, more intentional writing sessions.

The pen is fitted with a German-made gold-plated JoWo #6 stainless steel nib, a respected nib platform prized for its consistency, smoothness, and dependable ink flow. Available in Fine and Medium widths, the nib is well suited for everyday writing, journaling, and correspondence. Filling is handled by the included Schmidt piston converter, allowing the use of bottled fountain pen inks with straightforward maintenance and reliable performance.

Brand Heritage

ConCoPens was founded to preserve and reinterpret traditional Vietnamese lacquer craftsmanship through modern writing instruments. Each pen is produced through more than twenty carefully executed stages that combine natural materials, hand-finishing techniques, and contemporary fountain pen engineering. The result is a collection of writing instruments that honor Vietnam's artistic heritage while remaining practical companions for daily use.

Moc Brown embodies this philosophy particularly well. Its beauty lies not in elaborate decoration but in material authenticity, refined finishing, and the timeless appeal of natural wood tones rendered through traditional lacquer techniques. For enthusiasts who appreciate understated craftsmanship and organic elegance, it offers a thoughtful interpretation of Vietnamese lacquer artistry.

Great Introduction to Urushi-style Pen

I have had this pen for several days and I’m quite impressed. It writes really well. The Jowo feed and nib have good ink flow, and the pen’s weight and balance are really good, too. I’ve been writing with it a lot, and I’m very pleased. The lacquer work is very nice, and I think this is a really fine pen and very good value for the price. I think others are going to like the writing experience it offers, and be excited with the look of the finish on these. This is a wonderful addition to my “urushi” pen collection, and it would make a great pen for anyone wanting an affordable introduction to “urushi-style” pens.
