The Namiki Yukari Maki-e Fountain Pen - Apricot Tree and Warbler brings a classic seasonal pairing from Japanese art to the hand: delicate apricot blossoms and the elegant warbler, rendered in glimmering lacquer work that shifts with the light. Sized in the versatile Yukari profile, it balances gallery-worthy artistry with daily usability, joining precise engineering to centuries-old maki-e technique.

Craftsmanship & Design

Built on an ebonite core and finished in layers of hand-applied urushi, the pen showcases traditional maki-e methods that create quiet depth and refined detail. Artisans from Namiki’s Kokkokai atelier use sprinkled metallic powders and colored lacquer to draw the apricot boughs and the poised songbird, then seal and polish the surface to reveal subtle gradients and crisp outlines. The result is a luminous scene that feels alive beneath the lacquer, with warm metallic highlights that play across the trunk, petals, and feathers.

The Yukari form is deliberately restrained so the artwork can breathe: a clean cylinder, a precisely fitted screw-cap, and a gold-finished clip that adds a discreet note of brightness. In the hand, the polished lacquer is smooth and reassuring, with the understated glow characteristic of fine urushi. Each piece reflects the nuance of human touch and time-intensive finishing, making no two examples visually identical.

Writing Experience

At the heart of the Namiki Yukari Apricot Tree and Warbler fountain pen is an 18k gold nib, tuned for consistent, fluid ink delivery and a graceful line. The nib’s softness is controlled and composed rather than overly springy, offering a stable sweet spot and even flow across a range of paper types. Available in Fine, Medium, and Broad, it rewards a light hand with clean starts and confident strokes suitable for notes, correspondence, or extended journaling.

Pilot’s reliable cartridge/converter system supports practical daily use and an easy transition between inks. The Yukari’s balanced weight distribution and moderate diameter make long sessions comfortable, while the lacquered surface warms subtly with use, enhancing grip and tactile connection.

Provenance

Namiki, founded by Pilot in 1925, pioneered the union of precision penmaking and Japanese lacquer artistry. Within Namiki’s Kokkokai collective, craftspeople train for years to master urushi and maki-e techniques such as hira and togidashi, building imagery through layered lacquer, metallic powders, and meticulous polishing. The Yukari series sits at the nexus of that tradition and modern utility, offering a dependable writing instrument adorned with living art.

A wonderful store with very helpful staff.

Best selection of any pen store I've ever entered. Best thing this side of an actual pen show. I've never seen a store with so many pens from $50 to $20,000. Their selection of high-end Namiki pens is absolutely fantastic, as well as dozens of other brands.
