The Pilot Custom 742 Black Fountain Pen is one of Pilot’s classic full-size Custom models, pairing a traditional black resin body and gold-tone trim with one of the most distinctive nib options in the Japanese maker’s lineup: the 14k gold FA, or Falcon, nib. This particular example is offered in NOS condition and is especially appealing for a writer who wants the expressive character of Pilot’s Falcon-style nib in the larger Custom 742 platform.

Writing Experience

Pilot’s FA nib is a 14k gold No. 10 nib designed to provide a softer, more responsive feel than a conventional firm fountain-pen nib. Its cutout shoulders allow the tines to open under controlled pressure, producing noticeable line variation while retaining the precision and smoothness associated with Pilot’s Custom series. It is best treated as an expressive soft nib rather than pushed as an unrestricted calligraphy flex nib.

Craftsmanship & Design

The Custom 742 uses a classic cigar-shaped resin body with polished gold-tone appointments, a screw cap, and Pilot’s understated Custom-series styling. The black finish keeps the presentation traditional and lets the gold nib and trim provide the visual contrast. This pen is in new old stock condition. It is being sold without the original Pilot box or papers. One piece is available. The photos show a different nib size, but this pen will be shipped with the FA nib installed.
