Natural wood gives the Pilot Custom Enju a character that polished resin cannot duplicate. Its warm brown grain runs through a restrained, flat-ended silhouette, allowing the material to take the lead while gold trim provides a quiet point of contrast. The result is a fountain pen whose visual interest comes from the wood itself: an individual pattern of lines and tonal variations that makes each example distinct.
Craftsmanship & Design
The cap and barrel are crafted from Japanese Enju wood, also known as Japanese Pagoda Tree wood. Traditionally associated with longevity and good fortune, Enju brings a cultural connection to the pen without relying on elaborate decoration. Its grain becomes the central design element, giving the familiar proportions of a premium writing instrument a more organic appearance.
Gold accents frame the wood rather than compete with it. The straight profile and understated clip keep the composition balanced, while the transition between dark grain and warm metal gives the pen definition. For someone drawn to natural materials, the appeal lies in those subtle differences from one piece to another rather than a uniform, manufactured pattern.
Writing Experience
Pilot pairs the wooden exterior with its large, two-tone 18K gold #15 nib. Available in Fine, Medium, and Broad, it offers three distinct approaches to the page, from smaller handwriting and detailed notes to a fuller line that gives ink more room to show its color. The nib is the functional centerpiece of the design, balancing the pen's material character with the writing performance of the Custom collection.
The cartridge/converter filling system keeps everyday use straightforward. An included black ink cartridge provides a convenient starting point, while the supplied CON-70 converter allows the pen to be filled from bottled fountain pen ink. That flexibility makes it easy to move between the simplicity of cartridges and a wider selection of ink colors.
A Considered Presentation
The Custom Enju arrives with a black leather Pensemble pen case lined in soft gray suede, together with a Pilot presentation box. The case adds a practical companion for carrying the pen beyond the desk, while the complete presentation makes the natural wood and gold combination particularly well suited to a meaningful gift.
